How’s it going, Hive? The fact that I’m making it to a post tonight is something of a real accomplishment. Remember a few months ago when I mentioned that Immutable Realms, my EOS zine, was funded via Pomelo grants? They asked me to do a, “success story”, video. Of course I wanted to oblige but my studio space has been in disarray for months. Also, I prefer to shoot videos like this in one take and that is really hard. I got everything set up and after hours of complications and incoherent thoughts while recording, I got it. I’m tapped for tonight, though.
I wanted to share some of my select results from AI generation using MidJourney lately. My brother, and I, started an Instagram account to document the technology and some of our favorite prompt results, and to be available as a repository of the evolution of where AI goes, not only in art but in words as well. We use another tool called OpenAI generate poems inspired by the art we get. I recently did an interview with
for Immutable Realms which had some great insights to the ethics and philosophy of these developments as well.
I’m still fascinated by it all. The blurred lines are particularly interesting. Most of what I see posted on Instagram under the #conceptart hashtag these days are predominantly AI generated. Interestingly, about half of the, “artists”, sharing them won’t mention that they are, in fact, created using an AI prompt. I’ve talked with some friends about this and some become enraged; others simply so, “So what?”. It’s a curiosity to me, still, but I admit after a few months, it is becoming passé. I see beautiful art, but when it’s all beautiful, who cares?
I’ve learned that more than something being beautiful, or “perfect”, humans respond to that which is novel. Something they’ve never, or rarely seen before. I use it now, as a tool. It’s been helpful in starting compositions or beginning illustrations in areas that I’ve always struggled with, like landscapes and concept art. The cover of the first issue of Immutable Realms even used an AI generated base, but once I knew where I was going, I took over and did the rest of the art from my imagination. Just wanted to share an update on my AI journey.
