I don’t know how he would know what skunk pee tastes like, but those were his words right after he took his first sip of a cold beer on his birthday. He did take one more sip and then asked me if all beer tastes like this, “of course it does son, there isn’t any real difference in the taste of beers, and the brewers just want you to think there is.”
He asked one last question “is beer a taste that you have to acquire?” Not a bad question on his part but the truth is, “No, if you don’t like the taste of it now, you probably never will. I’ve never met anyone who acquired a taste for beer, I’ve met a lot of people who thought they might, but they just ended up drunk and sick, the last thing you want to be is a puking drunk.”, I told him. He was done, he said that he wasn’t even going to finish that beer and thanked me for letting him at least try some.
So turning sixteen for the young man was a learning experience, he learned that he just isn’t a beer drinker. Lucky for me he didn’t ask for a glass of wine after he poured his beer down the sink. I would have had to turn him down since everyone knows that wine is only for women to drink.
He did question why we weren’t drinking the normal beer I drink which is Corona, but that was easy enough to explain.” I wanted you to have the beer I would prefer to drink all the time, Modello Especial, but I just never like spending the extra money on myself, I was quick to point out that it tastes the same, but it is a little easier on the head in the morning if I get carried away and drink a few too many. “That’s why you only see me drink two Corona’s at the most in any one evening.”, and that wrapped it up.
He loves to fish, so in honor of his love of fishing let me just say, “hook , line , and sinker”, I set the hook and reeled him in. He can deal with his mother if he decides in the future he wants to try some wine.
Modello isn’t a bad beer, but it is the working class beer in Mexico and here in Texas for the majority of the Mexican laborers that I know. Lime will fix it though; did I mention I forgot to pick up some limes? Oh well, I had a lot on my mind that day and I can’t be expected to remember everything. I will grab some limes before I tackle the last four though, it really does need them.
While I am updating family things I might as well mention that Shortie did in fact make the top ten in Girls Scout cookie sales again this year for the entire area which has over 3,000 girls in it. Last year she finished tenth, I can guarantee that she will be at least ninth or better this year. Oh, you want to know why I am so confident in that statement?
The reason is the way girl scouts rules work, in that at the cookie booth sales there has to be two adults working the booths. Not many girls in Shortie’s troop had parents who were willing to work the booths, so my wife and the other troop leader ended up working the majority of the booths. Which meant Shortie and the other young girl worked those booths as well. Shortie out sold the other girl by over 100 boxes according to the records that the other leader kept since she was the “cookie mom” for the troop. That little girl also made the top ten in the area, I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I know that Shortie’s extra 100 boxes puts her ahead of at least one person, her troop mate.
The awards banquet is this Friday evening so we look forward to that, Shortie exceeded her goal of 1,000 boxes so she will also be getting that patch for her vest. My wife has already informed Shortie that this is it for lofty goals on cookie sales. Those two girls will basically be funding the troop activities with the $0.60 per box the troop gets from each sale. The rest of the girls in the troop had combined sales of less than 400 boxes. Some other parents need to step up or be prepared to reach in their purse or wallet when it comes to group activities in 2020 if they don’t.
Also this coming Sunday, Blondie will be confirmed in the church and we have a special family dinner planned for that Sunday afternoon. Those of you have been following along on that fiasco know that the paper she wrote on what the church means to her was selected for her to read at the confirmation service but she declined the offer. That also reminds me that the wife hasn’t gotten that paper back from the minister and Blondie said she would read it for me since I was out of town when she wrote it and turned it in.
So that should get you up to speed on what is happening in my little world this week. What do you have happening that you would care to share in the comments?
Until next time,
