I feel a lot better now that I have gotten a chance to sit down and do a little research of my own. The last six hours have been just a tad bid disconcerting for me since I heard on the radio today about a new video game named “Active Shooter” that was set to be available somewhere around June 6. 2018.
The infamous Mark and Melinda show in Austin, Texas had a little discussion about this new game on the Wednesday afternoon show. Those of you who have read my recent daily dose about this duo know that I don’t put a lot of faith in what Melinda has to say. So when Mark announced about this new video game, Active Shooter, the first words out of Melinda’s mouth were “Who in their right mind thinks that a game like this is acceptable?”
Well Melinda, I think I am in my right mind, and while I am at it I will tell you that just because it may be in poor taste for some folks it doesn’t make it unacceptable. Personally I don’t have any desire to play video games and I hate that we are having so many school shooting here in the USA but just because we have issues here doesn’t make it unacceptable to people on other parts of the Earth or right here in the USA for that matter.
We have to remember, it is “just a game” and there are countless other games that involve guns and killing, there are even more games that have to do with war, complete with small arms, tanks, and even bombs that drop from airplanes. I guess the fact that we are at war in several places around the world never has crossed your mind because I have yet to hear you mention one negative word about any of these type games I’ve mentioned. Is that because we are not fighting a war here on USA soil? It seems to me that would be a logical conclusion on my part when examining your question.
Game developers make their products for worldwide distribution, not just here in the United States, and the dev for this game it turns out is from Russia. Let’s face it, we have been doing our best to make Russia look like bad guys for quite a while, all our media can talk about is how the Russians help steal the election from that poor old tired Mrs. Clinton. So maybe a game coming from a Russian dev that exposes one of our biggest blights is more than fair in the Russians eyes. We here in the USA are always trying to point out other problems in other countries but when one of them decides to capitalize on an issue we have it is the worst thing imaginable to people here.
I wasn’t concerned about the game, the part that was disconcerting to me was that the site that was going to distribute the game had changed their minds and pulled the plug on launching the game, that was the part that got me.
The problem with spoken words is you can’t read them, so when Mark said that steem wasn’t going to allow it for sale on their platform; that is what got me. I had always thought the owners here were about free speech, so I was beginning to question in my mind just how far a person can go on here in speaking their mind. My first thought was “welcome to Steemface” or “Twittsteem” because those are sights that censor material, how could this bastion of freedom known as steemit.com have fallen so fast?
I was pleased to find out that we have nothing to worry about as far as I can tell about any of the freedom disappearing anytime soon. The site that Mark was referring to was actually steamgames.com not steemit.com; but he didn’t give the complete name just steem or actually steam as it turned out to be.
This confusion between steem and steam does pose a problem for us here, or even a potentially huge problem I think.
Seeing that I only heard the report and wasn’t able to read it, I assumed it was steemit.com and the report he was reading was confusing the crypto “steem” with the social platform steemit. I wasn’t aware of steamgames.com and I guess that is because I’m not a gamer.
If I can make this mistake several other folks can as well; and there may be some blow back that comes from this Active Shooter game story that we start feeling. So we need to be aware of this and if we are talking with folks about steem, steemit.com and any of the steemit apps we surely need to be up to speed on this situation so we can explain that steemit.com has nothing to do with steamgames.com or Active Shooter.
I know that there have been some posts published here about the Active Shooter game and the possible confusion that might happen, but I experienced it firsthand myself on Wednesday so if it can happen with me it can happen with anyone. The only difference was I wasn’t upset about the game, but that it was being pulled and not distributed, that was the disturbing part to me. Steem on, steemians.
