I’m getting ready for my ECL test now and looking for new ways to brush up my English. So I’ve subscribed to several podcasts in the hope that it will help me to improve my Listening and Writing skills.
I’ve found that this method has not only broadened my opportunities to learn English but also introduced me to new English authors. Some of the stories are so amazing that I can’t help telling you about them.
It happened that the first story I listened to was The Door in the Wall by HG Wells. Despite the fact that it was written in 1906, this story is very interesting and modern in its psychological aspects as we see them today.
This story tells us about a man who tells his friend an amazing story that happened to him in his childhood.
He was walking around the street and he saw a green door in the wall. When he entered, an amazing world welcomed him. There were nice people and nice animals there. And he also met a kind woman he liked very much.
It’s necessary to say that the boy’s mother died and his father wasn’t very kind to him.
After that he saw this door several times during his life at different stages of his life. But he never entered it again because each time he had other responsibilities. When at last he decided to return he was found dead the next day.
We never find out what it really was and what happened with the main character of the story. I think everyone has their own idea about it.
If you are interested in this story you can find the podcast episode here. Hope you’ll like it. As for me, I chose this story as a basis for preparing for questions related to my favorite books and the like.
