I’ve been surfing the net since the mid to late 90s. First on dial-up then on ADSL. Since then I’ve seen many a change in the internet and as I predicted it has been used for good and for nastiness.
I found a few great blogs which have all mostly fallen by the wayside. The same with great forums which largely got replaced by Facebook and Twitter. I resisted FB and Twitter/X because I didn’t see the need but then as my friends and family got more and more into the Internet I decided I needed an FB account to keep up with them.
It was great for a long time and then Facebook decided that more and more it would rely on algorithms to feed me junk it thinks I might like. So what I used to use to keep me closer to friends and family has ironically taken me further and further away from them.
Taking this into consideration and the fact I have a few projects on the go that require more of my attention, I’ve decided to take a break from all forms of social media at least until the new year.
I’ve already deactivated my Twitter/X account as well as my Instagram account. I rarely used Twitter and Instagram was the biggest time waster I had. Deleting Instagram also removes Threads which I used a bit but got bored with.
I’m in two minds about Facebook. On one hand I use Facebook Marketplace, on the other hand FB is a complete pain in the pooper and I want it to die. So come 1st Jan I will remove my Facebook account.
When it comes to this platform I’m not so sure. I’ve been more of a consumer lately than a poster but I’m not ready to give up this platform just yet.
However, I’ve noticed that I still want to write, it’s just more to get stuff out of my head. As such I will be completely changing how I do this and it doesn’t include the internet.
By now a number of iOS users have probably heard of Apple’s Journal app. I’m finding more and more that writing a journal is more what I’m trying to achieve with my thoughts than posting on the net and hoping to find a kindred spirit of sorts. So for the time being at least all my efforts will be put into writing in Journal. Most of what’s in my head is only of interest to me anyway.
However, one of my projects I’m wanting to really kick off is a technology based podcast and so I’m thinking I’d like to make posts on D.Buzz to promote each episode without being too advertising. That’s a post that will be made once I’ve got the first episode up. I’ll be using a mix of ACast and YouTube to do this so watch out. Most likely it’ll be in the new year when that’s up and running.
So until then, thanks for getting this far and I’ll see you in the future, hopefully in a new guise.
