I read a lot of books and mainly crime stories. My top 3 of favourite crimewriters is English writer R.J. Ellory, Swedish writer Henning Mankell and Northern Irish writer Claire McGowan. This post is about Henning Mankell. He wrote a series of crimenovels about police-inspector Kurt Wallander. The following books were translated into the English language:
Faceless killers 1997
The white lioness1998
Sidetracked 1999
The fifth woman 2000
The dogs of Riga 2001
One step behind 2002
Firewall 2002
The man who smiled 2005
The Pyramid 2008
The Troubled man 2011
An event in autumn 2014
The stories with Kurt Wallander are situated the city of Ystad in the south of Sweden and the capital of the province of Skäne län. In the first couple of books Kurt Wallander lives in the city, almost in the center. In the end of the series of books he moves to a cottage close to the sea. Of course it is all fiction but the street where he lived in Ystad actually exists. The name is Mariagatan. Even the house is there, it is number 10.
A few years ago we spent some days in the beautiful city of Copenhagen and we took the opportunity to visit Ystad. The train takes you there in one hour and a half. You pass the Øresund Bridge, famous from the Swedish tv-series The Bridge. We made a walk through the city of Ystad and saw several locations that were used when filming the Wallander tv-series of the BCC, with Kenneth Branagh. It was quite a memorable day.
