Six of Crows is a Duology written by Leigh Bardugo.
The best way to describe these novels is that they are heist novels in a fantasy world. These two novels are set in the Grishaverse, but they are very different from the Grisha trilogy. Even though they too have a bigger than life story, their story is totally different.
Kaz Brekker is a 17 years old criminal. He is second in command in a gang called the Crows. He lives in Ketterdam, a city inspired by Amsterdam. He has a vengeance to fulfil. His closest crew members are Inej Ghafa, a Suli acrobat known as the wraith. She was kidnapped by slavers and sold into prostitution. Brekker bought her contract which added her to his crew. Nina Zenik a Grisha, Heartrender, from Ravka who works for the Crow and wants to free her former friend, Helvar who is a former Grisha hunter. Jesper Fahey an excellent sniper with a serious gambling problem and Wylan, a brilliant chemist.
Jan Van Eck offers Kaz Brekker a once in a life time deal. Find, release and bring him Bo Yul-Bayur in return for an outrageous amount of money. Enough money to buy everyone their freedom and solve their problems. The main problem is that Bo Yul-Bayur is a prisoner in the Ice Court in Fjerda, the most secure prison on the planet.
Obviously, nothing is as simple as it looks or sounds. Even though the Crows are the most talented thieves it is still a challenging job. Especially since they don't know the entire story. These books have more twists and turns than you can imagine. Literally. At some point it did get a bit over the top, and a bit tiresome.
The first novel kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down. It was so interesting, new obstacles around every corner and the characters where so likable for criminals. They didn't choose this life, they simply had to survive.
The second novel had too many twists and turns. At some point I just wanted to settle down and pick a direction. Still it was interesting and I love the characters. I wish I could spend more time with them.
There is also no need to read the previous Grisha trilogy in order to understand these novels. They stand on their own.
If you are looking for some fun fantasy to read, this is a great choice for you. It's not too light or too heavy and a great read.
