Olinda is a historic city located in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, on the coast of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, just north of Recife and south of Paulista. It has a population of 389,494, an area of 41,681 km2 (16,093 mi2), and nine people per square kilometer. It is one of the best preserved colonial cities in Brazil.
Olinda has a historic city district (World Heritage Site), churches and a number of important tourist attractions. Unlike Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, admission to the carnival in Olinda is free. All the festivals are celebrated in the streets.
