The Swiss President, Johann Schneider-Ammann, stressed on Monday that Switzerland should participate in a Free Trade agreement with the UK post-Brexit. He suggested that the UK could either rejoin EFTA (the European Free Trade Association) which it left when it joined the EU in the 1970s, or a trade deal could be signed between EFTA and the UK, without formal membership.
EFTA membership would give the UK access to the European Single Market.
Britain was a founder member of EFTA in 1960. Current members are Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
