British PM Theresa May made a speech in Florence asking for what is practically a moratorium on Brexit and letting things stand as they are until 2021.
"Theresa May proposed pausing a full Brexit until 2021 by asking EU countries to agree to a two-year transition period during which the UK would continue to enjoy unfettered access to the single market."
*insisted the UK was “unconditionally committed to maintaining Europe’s security” and offered a new treaty on maintaining law enforcement and criminal justice cooperation
*indicated that the UK could make extra financial contributions on top of continuing to pay into the EU budget until 2020. She said Britain would “cover our fair share of the costs” to participate in “specific policies and programs ... such as science, education and culture – and mutual security.”
*reiterated that the UK will not accept “physical infrastructure at the border” between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, but gave no details that could help break the stalemate in talks in this area.
*promised to enshrine the rights of EU citizens in the Brexit treaty and allow British courts to take the rulings of the European Court of Justice into account when judging disputed cases
Isn't this playing with people? Ok, I think Brexit is a really stupid idea, but that is just my opinion, in any case the people of the UK were given the opportunity to decide for themselves and Brexit won, so why the hell doesn't the British government get on with it? If you get screwed, well you voted for it, if it turns out your decision was the right one, well also it was your decision.
But I see this asking for more time, as a way of eventually not Brexiting, which would be the sane thing to do apparently as all UK businesses are in an uproar over this, Northern Ireland has a big problem, Scotland doesn't want to get out and even in places were Brexit got the most votes a lot of people are re thinking this thing, so a couple of more years to think this over would be good.
On the other hand I think the damage is done, all the other EU members see Britain as a member who is only there for whatever it can get and then it always backs the US, let's face it if there apparently weren't very difficult economic challenges out of the EU the UK would have been out of the EU the day after the vote, but fear has the government postponing this.
Just get your shit together and leave, whatever the outcome, that's what you voted for wasn't it?
