Texas' Kettle House: A Bowl-Shaped Oddity
Why live in a home shaped like a box when you can live in one shaped like a bowl? Why limit a kettle's purpose in your life to just your morning cup of tea when you can curl up inside one night after night? Strange questions, for certain, but what's life without its curiosities.
The Kettle House is a pint-sized metal structure shaped like, you guessed it, a kettle in Galveston, Texas. What's perhaps most fascinating about the architectural curiosity is, without question, its durability.
Where the large majority of its neighbors are raised from the ground by means of stilts to prevent flooding of their insides during hurricane season, the Kettle House sits comfortably on the ground having found itself no worse for wear at the hands of inclement weather for over 50 years. An architectural marvel, or sheer dumb luck? The answer is debatable.
For decades now different stories and urban legends have circulated concerning the Kettle House. A number of civilians over the years have stated that the home was constructed from an upside down silo, a reality when observing the structure doesn't seem all that far fetched, while others have gone on record to say the home was designed with the purpose of one day opening as a convenience store, a plan that ultimately never came to fruition.
Inside of Texas' Kettle House
Whatever the true purpose of the Kettle House may be, it's a brilliant sight for those in search of fun oddities and curiosities, and should you ever find yourself in Galveston near the Gulf of Mexico, I'd recommend a brief stop for a photo opportunity.
