There may be any number of motivations for a person starting a business.
What is ours? Knowing this at the onset can help us plan better to meet these goals and aspirations but also to see how they change as we get more deeply involved in our new start-up.
Some motivations may be:
- Sense of ownership
- Supplemental income
- Meeting our Passion
- A second career
- Desire for a challenge
- Absolute necessity (no employment available)
- Personal freedom and control
- Increased financial security
After identifying our motivations for starting a business it may also be beneficial to consider the following:
- Is our motivation compelling enough to see it through?
- What are the short, medium and long term impacts going to be?
- How will this affect our family and other aspects of our life?
- Does this need to be full-time or part-time and do we have the time?
- What are our earning aspirations?
- Is our idea really worth it?
Thinking through all of these aspects, before we begin, may help you to clarify our path and identify potential pitfalls.
These aspirations and questions should be reviewed regularly and adjustments made if we see we are veering off course or our aspirations were unrealistic to begin with.
