When we look back to preview the past and contrast it with the present, we realize there is a lot we have achieved that we never could have dreamed of. We realize that a lot has happened in our lives that we could not have thought possible.
Time passes us by everyday and we realize that some of what we want in life has not actually been actualized but so many unplanned events have over-taken our carefully thought out plans for the future(which now happens to be the present).
Looking back to see what went wrong
To better understand this, we would have to look back at our actions and realize that we might not have properly prioritize our goals as we should have. For this reason, we have been unable to actually focus on our goals. We have been sidelined by things which pale in significance when we place them beside our life goals. This "things" have used up most of the resources which we would have hitherto devoted to the fulfilment of our life goals. At this point, the satisfaction we once derived from those things would then begin to fade and we would realize we have not achieved much that could lead to our personal fulfilment. We would get angry at ourselves and fight ourselves for this and for some this would lead to depression.
Looking on the bright side, this is an inspiration
Now, we should realize that we actually do have achievements. Maybe these achievements lack substance when we weight them against our personal life goals but then our lives have not been wasted after all.
Planning for the future
The point now is that there is still a future ahead of us. Knowing our mistakes in the past should motivate us to NOT want a repeat. This should drive us to revisit our priorities and make sure our scale of preference is right. Nothing takes any form of precedence over our life goals because achieving these life goals is the only way we can live a fulfilled life and have a life full of personal satisfaction.
