Below is the canal leading to the entrance of a floating market an hour outside of Bangkok Thailand. I took this photo since my job used to entail looking at waterfront installations like this to see it they needed maintenance. This one does.
Nice water.
I'm sitting in a boat will no keel and a large loud motor while smelling fumes in 110 degree heat and no breeze. The seat is about 3 inches off the deck and the backrest is four inches high.
I might be said to be sprawled out more than sitting. My legs are stretched out in front of me with nothing to brace them on. It's a good abdominal workout for a healthy person with hips that work well.
Soon this other boat will pass by quickly to give us a wake to bounce over.
Still on the way to the market.
Here it is.
We've still got this wharf-like installation on the other side. Way more interesting to me than trinkets.
Ok - here is some random stuff to buy. We are in a line with other boats moving very slowly.
Stopped now for the other lady in the boat with me to look at wallets.
Soon we will be at another stall to buy stuff at.
Well, not soon really.
Between two stalls, this is what the underside of a footbridge looks like.
Now we are on the other side of the canal with other stuff to buy and more boats.
Yup. It's awesome.
You can see a good shot of the engine they use here on that other boat passing us on the left. I have no idea why it is so large and loud.
Wait. What? This is the entrance? What did we just do?
Sigh...
Someone else is going faster. Maybe they paid more for that service.
Yup. Now we are at the market. Seriously. This is not over yet. It may have just started. They made a movie here.
A good one.
Ooooo-K. It's looks like this is the market coming up now. That one pylon to the left is crumbling and leaning dangerously and I would report it if I was working here.
Hmm....
Oh look! Tourists shopping! I love this shot so much that I put it on top for the thumbnail.
A little bit of a traffic jam here.
That was quick!
Haha! There's more!
We are stopped so the other lady can buy a tea cup. I'm not looking that way or they will hand me one to look at too and not want to take it back from me.
I kind of want the black velvet tiger flag, but alas, we are on the wrong side.
I like the woodwork on this porch.
This seems to be an area of housing.
Hmm...
Like a subdivision on the water.
This yellow boat is different.
Not Shown:
- When I paid the hotel staff 1000 thb ($30 usd) to go on this trip starting at 7 am.
- When I slept in a taxi for 1.5 hours to get here.
- When I paid the entrance fee (!) of 2000 thb ($60 usd) to get on the boat.
- When I got off the boat at two separate islands, and walked in the hot sun to stalls were you could buy more stuff they REALLY want to to buy because you are trapped on an island.
- When I got off the boat where all the tourists were for the 15 minute bathroom break in an atrocious sub-far facility.
- The return boat ride to the parking lot which can be seen in the first 4 shots if you flip them.
- The taxi ride to lunch where I ate the cheapest thing on the menu - a half serving of fried rice for 400 thb ($13 usd),
- The stop at a wax museum of historical Thai people when I did not have the cash left to pay the entry fee even if I had wanted to go in there. Thankfully my partner in crime did not want to see this either, we so left.
- The stop at a place with 3 chained up elephants in front of it when I did not have the cash left to pay the entry fee even if I had wanted to go in there. Thankfully my partner in crime did not want to see this either, we so left.
- The moment when we were driving up to the hotel and the taxi driver said in a surprised voice, "You have a market right here! Don't you know that everything is the same and cheaper in this market then at the floating one?"
Why did I do this trip at all?
My hotel asked me to go on this adventure with another single lady staying at the hotel since she always wanted to go to a floating market and and did not want to go alone. I do not shop. I did this to be nice in case I ever want company for something else later in life. Hopefully my karma pays off one day.
I had only the vaguest idea of what a floating market was in the first place. I had no idea it was far away or expensive. I did not know I was going at 7 am until after I paid the hotel. I originally thought the first 1000 thb was the price for the whole thing. When we told the hotel we EACH had to pay another 2000 thb for the boat, they were shocked and made a note of it for future victims.
For contrast, the complete cost of my recent three day trip to Singapore to keep legal immigration status was $20 usd less than this day trip for tourist shopping.
I'm sure this lady was glad to see the end of me as I was her. But she bought the plate with our photo printed on it for 800 thb and I did not. So her memory of her partner for this trip is most likely clearer than mine.
Here is a video I took of 1:30 of this fun trip. I uploaded it to dtube recently, but all my videos seem to be gone from now, which is certainly for the best.
My post is for MarketFriday by . You can see how people shop all over the world on her call for entries post. I hope to see you there too!
Denise likes to see flowers in her market posts, so here are some on the highway in Singapore, seen as I was on the bus coming back to Malaysia. This is the best of many poor shots of such a lovely sight to see :)

Statistics say that only 5% of people with health resolutions for the New Year will still be on track after Super Bowl Sunday. Is your fitness equipment still out handy, and are you still on a "diet?"
I lost "Half My Size" eight years ago by using natural methods. I started on December 5th and did not give up. You can do it too!
