Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a plant that is easy to see and easy to care for, therefore this plant has long been known in Indonesia as an ornamental plant. It is estimated that this plant originated from Mexico and has spread to various parts of the world. These flowers are divided into two types, namely types for decoration and type for food. Flower plants are very large, usually bright yellow, with a large flower head (diameter can reach 30cm). This flower is actually a compound interest, composed of hundreds to thousands of small flowers on one bump. Sunflower also has a typical behavior, ie the flowers are always facing toward the sun or heliotropisme.
USE OF SUNFLOWER FLOWERS
Sunflower developed for the food industry, is divided into two major groups of interest for oilseed and confectionery. The type of sunflower used as a raw material of oil, has a higher oil content and thinner skin. In the world, the major sunflower producing countries are Russia and France, while in Asia the main producers are China and India. In these countries sunflower seeds are generally processed into oil, but some are processed into food and cosmetic raw materials.
