I'm incredibly excited and pleased to share with you this journey and research I've been doing about my city (Valencia, Venezuela). I'm a passionate history buff, and just imagining what those small and large corners of the city looked like 50, 60, or even 100 years ago is absolutely fascinating. In my previous post, I showed you some places, and today I have others to share. For my research, I relied heavily on the Instagram account of a Valencian economist who is also a history enthusiast and, in fact, a member of the Carabobo Academy of History. We begin this tour on Urdaneta Avenue, diagonally across from Bolívar Square in the city. There's a building there that has always caught my eye: the Imperio Cinema (the sign still shows what this building once was). My mom always tells me that she used to watch movies there with her friends after school, but sadly, it's been abandoned for many years. I remember that for a while, a group of young people belonging to a social and cultural movement called Frapom lived there, and my best friend had some friends in that organization, so we went to visit them once, and they gave us a tour of the building. I even remember finding it both terrifying and fascinating to see the decaying movie screen in that dark room, the dusty and dilapidated seats, and even, in the projection booth, you could still find film reels and tickets that clearly said: Batman Begins.

>Iniciemos este recorrido por la Avenida Urdaneta, diagonal a la Plaza Bolívar de la ciudad, allí hay un edificio que siempre ha llamado mi atención, se trata del Cine Imperio, (el letrero evidencia lo que fue este edificio alguna vez) Mi mamá siempre me cuenta que allí ella veía películas con sus amigos cuando salía del colegio, pero desde hace muchos años es un lugar abandonado, lamentablemente. Yo recuerdo que durante un tiempo allí se asentó un grupo de jóvenes pertenecientes a un movimiento social y cultural llamado Frapom, y mi mejor amiga tenía algunos amigos dentro de esa organización, así que en una ocasión fuimos a visitarlos y ellos nos dieron un recorrido por el edificio. But according to Francisco Carriello, this place was more than just a movie theater; it was a movie theater, inaugurated in May 1941, and it was the first air-conditioned movie theater in the city (quite a novelty at the time). It also had a capacity to comfortably accommodate 860 people. A very popular soda fountain among the young people of the time, Don Pablo Emilio Pérez's Soda Fountain, also operated there. However, what caught my attention most about this place, although Carriello doesn't mention it on his Instagram, is that I understand the famous tango singer Carlos Gardel performed there on May 17, 1935, as part of his "Zorzal Criollo" tour. However, the dates don't quite add up, since the movie theater officially opened in 1941. Perhaps the people of Valencia at that time wanted to welcome him there before its official inauguration. Here I'll leave you a photograph of what it looked like back then; I don't think it's changed much over the years.

Allí también funcionaba una fuente de sodas muy popular entre los jóvenes de la época, la Fuente de Sodas de Don Pablo Emilio Pérez. Sin embargo lo que más llamó mi atención de este lugar, aunque no lo detalla Carriello en su instagram, es que tengo entendido que allí se llegó a presentar el famoso cantante de tangos Carlos Gardel el 17 de mayo de 1935 como parte de su gira "Zorzal Criollo" sin embargo no me cuadran las fechas, ya que el cine teatro se inauguró oficialmente en 1941, sin embargo tal vez los valencianos de esa época quisieron recibirlo allí antes de su inauguración oficial. Can you see that corner building way back where a department store called Redu is now located? It's also diagonally across from Plaza Bolívar, but on the other side. It's quite large, and although it looks more modern these days, as does the interior because of the store, I'm glad to see that it still retains some colonial features in its architecture. I suppose the city government allowed commercial activity in these places on the condition that the facades remain intact.

And this is what it looked like in times past 😍 It was a commercial center; a store called "Bandera Roja" operated there for a time. Judging by the clothing of the people in the photograph, I can deduce that it was around the 1920s, but during colonial times, the building was a family home, and later, although I don't remember where I read that information, it housed a hotel called "Hotel Carabobo." Towards the end of the 19th century, a general store called "La Despensa Valenciana" operated there, run by Don Luis María Peña Briceño until 1891 when it closed. Afterwards, a luxurious establishment opened: "Botilleria La Tropical de Vilariño," managed by Dr. Manuel Vilariño.

Next to that establishment is another one that has always caught my eye because of its beautiful facade and distinctive colonial roof. I remember when I was a child, it housed a clothing store called La Pirámide, and now it's home to a shoe store called Manhatan.

According to Francisco Arriello's Instagram account, this colonial mansion was the home of the Arvelo Rodríguez family, a very influential family who owned a large sugarcane plantation. It also served as the headquarters for several important institutions, such as the Congregation of Cloistered Nuns of the Discalced Carmelites and the La Gruta Literary Club, where intellectuals and politicians gathered for discussions. Don Luis Chávez's tailor shop, "Casa Chávez," also operated there, and this is what it looked like at the beginning of the last century.

And finally, we have Plaza Sucre, which, like Plaza Bolívar, is very beautiful these days. According to my research, this plaza wasn't always called that. It was also called Plaza Guzmán Blanco in honor of the Venezuelan president at the time, but on one occasion, citizens, angered by the president, tore down his statue and threw it into the Cabriales River in an act of protest. It was then that they decided to erect a statue in honor of Sucre, one of our most celebrated independence heroes. In the first photograph, I tried to replicate an angle from which a photograph was taken more than a hundred years ago, which I will show you later.

>Y finalmente tenemos la Plaza Sucre, la cuál, al igual que la plaza Bolívar está muy bonita actualmente. Según lo que estuve investigando, esta plaza no siempre se llamó así, También se llamó Plaza Guzmán Blanco en honor al presidente de Venezuela de esa época, pero los ciudadanos en una ocasión, molestos con el presidente, arrancaron su estatua y la arrojaron a río Cabriales en un acto de protesta y fue allí cuando decidieron edificar una estatua en honor a Sucre, uno de nuestros próceres independentistas más célebres. This is the photograph I'm talking about. As you can see, there's something very particular there. It's true, neither the statue of Sucre nor that of Guzmán Blanco are there, and that's because in 1895, before the statue of Sucre, they placed a replica of the Statue of Liberty there, which they called "La Peregrina." I'm also struck by the fact that there was a beautiful colonial house there, facing the plaza. It no longer exists; in its place, there's a commercial building.
