Music, in its essence, is what gives us memories. And the longer a song has existed in our lives, the more memories we have of it.
Stevie Wonder
I love Phil Collins. It's not just the music that makes me love him. It's the memories. When I was a child, my father would play Phil Collins for hours and hours and I learned most of the lyrics by heart just by listening subconsciously.
Today, whenever I hear Phil Collins, I think about my Dad. My Dad traveled a lot. He worked offshore and whenever he came back home from work, he made sure we enjoy paradise. There would be snacks and wine and music and foreign exotic cartoons. Bliss! He loved music. He would play songs by local Itsekiri musicians and western musicians. One of his favorite artiste is Phil Collins.
There is a way music takes us back in time. Do you remember when you had a crush on your first love, there must have been a song. For me that was African Queen by Tuface Idibia.
Then there are spiritual songs. You should listen to Christian songs. I like listening to songs by Toby Mac. Toby Mac is not very popular among the Christian folks in my locality. But it is full of so much inspiration and fun. One of my favorite Toby Mac songs is "Loose my Soul". Please listen to "Loose my Soul" in the YouTube video below.
There was a time that I thought that I could make it as a musician. I bought a guitar and practiced for countless hours. I had no talent for music, that made it difficult for me but it didn't stop me. I practiced until my ears got trained. I practiced until my fingers became very flexible on my right hand and strong on the right. One thing that learning to play the guitar thought me is that consistency pays. I learned the principles of practice, process, and patience. I eventually discovered my musical self. Today I can play the guitar and keyboard, but I also discovered that music is not for me. I mean, I'm not meant to do music professionally. I still love music. I still play but I don't ever want to play professionally.
Gratitude
Today I'm grateful for songs. I'm grateful for the gift of music. Can you imagine this life without music? It would be grave. Life would be a really boring place without music.
Music has the power to uplift the soul. It can make a sad person happy. Music can actually alleviate illness. I've heard of people who actually got miraculously healed just by listening to a song.
