Today marks the dawning of a new era for Canberra with laws now in effect that allow people in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) to legally own and use cannibis, becoming the first jurisdiction in Australia to do so.
From February 1st, people over the age of 18 are allowed to possess up to 50 grams (1.75 ounce) of cannabis for personal use and grow two plants, with a maximum of four plants per household.
However, it's important to note that hydroponic set-ups are illegal as is buying any part of the plant, including seeds; even sharing a joint is viewed as supply which is still considered an offense.
To the unsuspecting visitors, use of the drug in public is still banned, so don't go lighting up at any public events and of course, driving under the influence is still a big No-No (taken with a side-note of caution, as we also have a very active highway patrol, fully equipped to perform side-of-road drug-testing!)
Of course, 'exposing a child to the drug' remains an offence under the new laws, and rightfully so IMHO.
The new state laws are in direct conflict with the current federal laws where possessing cannabis remains a criminal offense however the 'powers that be' say that it would be a 'strange use' of police resources to pursue federal charges.
Although, from personal experience, I think it would depend on the situation, the arresting officer and how they felt about you on the day... (a tad too cynical?? nah, probs not)
Soooo, what are the main take-away's... whilst in Canberra, enjoy your weed legally, from the privacy of your own (or a friends) home... but DON'T SHARE it with your friends, DON'T SELL it to your friends and DON'T DRIVE while under the influence... and of course, it goes without saying... DON'T LET your kids find your stash..!!! :P
Anyhoo, on a personal note... it was especially nice to wake up this morning, knowing that I could finally enjoy one of the simple things in life... after all these years... on such a momentous occasion... without having to break the law to do so.
