With Uruguay then Canada legalising weed for recreational use I thought it would be just a matter of time before a whole raft of Nations would follow suit. I definitely did not think however, that the next to legalise could possibly by my one and only.... New Zealand.
For the international reader not so familiar with NZ politics, we had a government change last year and with that came an angel in the form of Chloe Swarbrick. She is a Green MP and has the mental health and drug law reform portfolios among others. She has been working tirelessly at informing her followers and the public that the current war on drugs is actually doing way more harm than good. She made an announcement this week that drug addiction is going to be treated as the mental health issue it is, with a focus on rehabilitation over criminalization.
So there it is, it all comes down to a public vote on the issue. A binding referendum on legalising weed for recreational use in NZ will be held at the 2020 general election. Time for change!
