EXT:DAYTIME - AUGUST 2001
Henry Bear walking through hemp plants in a wooded area talking on a cell phone.
Henry Bear:
Liu Hui we’ve done some more experiments and I’ve sent the findings to your office. Please let me know if you need anything else.
(Beat)
Henry Bear:
Good to hear. Talk to you later.
Henry Bear hangs up his cell phone as one of his children runs up to him. He grabs the child and raises it up into the air before swinging the kid back to the ground.
Child:
That was fun Papa. Do it again.
Henry Bear:
Certainly. [He swings child again] Do you know that your Dad is working on something very important that will help to change the world for the better? It will help you to survive, and it will help your children survive, and many generations after that to survive as well.
Child:
Mom said something about it.
Henry Bear:
I’m glad that you have an understanding of the significance of events happening around you. Someday these woods will belong to you, and you can always come here and think about this time in our family history.
Child:
OK Papa. I’ll remember.
INT: HOUSE
Henry Bear sits at a table with lots of books and papers.
Henry Bear (Voiceover):
I’ve lost my focus. I can’t think anymore about this information and how it’s going to change the world. I just don’t care sometimes. I want to relax and spend more time with my family. Why all of this ground breaking? It gets old. And yet, and yet, I think it might be all I know at times. There doesn’t seem to be a way to separate my life from my work. I mean the plans come from my wife, and the ultimate goal is to save the planet for my children.
INT: NIGHT
Henry Bear at dinner with his family.
HENRY BEAR:
It’s all coming along very nice. We’re going to make your Great Great Grandfather happy darling.
WIFE:
Henry Ford didn’t make that car for a reason. Hope the FBI doesn’t start looking around. Think of the children.
HENRY BEAR:
Of course Dear. It’s just for biofuel.
The engines already being prepared with the plans you inherited. Only some minor alternations with modern technology. It will take a little time to perfect it. Then we need to legalize the invention and market it to the masses. We’ll be helping the Earth while revolutionizing energy across the globe.
WIFE:
OK. Sounds like you know what you’re doing. Rather have you getting into mischief in the garage then doing a million other things people do in their leisure time.
Guess that’s why I love you.
HENRY BEAR:
Well, I’m going to plant some more in the meadow behind the woods, and near the summer pond, and one for the gazebo. We’ll also need to find some engineers to help us. We’ll be learning a lot along the way.
WIFE:
You’re going to plant an entire field of pot? We could get in serious trouble for that. Think of the children?
HENRY BEAR:
We’re not growing pot. It’s Hemp. Growing the plants is illegal yes. However, owning the product from the plant is legal. We’re growing it to make engine fuel. I’ll try not to overdo it.
Thank you,
Cyrus Emerson
