On October 17th, Ontarians, (and all Canadians?) will be able to purchase "recreational" cannabis from a government owned website. The government will deal, distribute, sell weed cannabis to people 19 and older (18 in Quebec,) just like it does with alcohol. They will get the cannabis from private companies who are good friends "pre-approved" or "licensed" growers. (It's only somewhat of an exaggeration because some of the companies are public, and anyone can buy shares, but the companies/lobbies are very much owned and heavily staffed by "ex" politicians.)
I heard this exact sentence about a half dozen times by the PR people, but the idea is that this scheme plan is under the principle of "controlling the quality, and protecting young people and the community." ('Cause you know, my smartphone for instance, would be even more amazing if the government made or sold it...) And doesn't it sound like the "unapproved, not at all connected to organized crime, very much law-abiding dealers/growers," (LOL,) will never sell to kids, and will just voluntarily close their businesses 'cause there's a new law that says only licensed growers can sell through the gov't?!
At some future date, and as I currently understand it, they will also allow private, brick and mortar stores to open. How this will go is supposedly up to the provinces and municipalities, and each has announced slightly different plans. However, these dispensaries will also be "licensed" (and limited in number,) and will still be forced to get their cannabis from the federal government pot depot which gets it from those aforementioned growers. See: Fascism and private enterprise controlled by gov't.
Some provinces will allow individuals to grow up to 4 plants in their homes for personal use, while other provinces, like Ontario, will not. I'm sure this will go over well, won't lead to any smuggling or crime, and no one will ever challenge this randomness in court...? Here is a decent breakdown of each province's current (08/15/2018) plan. https://globalnews.ca/news/4388030/marijuana-provinces-plan/
But it's all good... They're just continuing a long line of drug dealing (or protecting the dealers they approve of,) since the good old opium days...
