Canada will legalize marijuana for recreational use in July 2018.
Here's what you need to know.
THE WEED LAWS:
Must be 19 years or older.
30 grams is the maximum limit you can carry around publicly.
600 grams is the maximum limit you can have at your home.
You can grow up to 4 plants at home.
Only permitted to use recreational cannabis in a private residence. Not allowed to use in public places, workplaces, or motorized vehicles.
WHERE TO BUY WEED
LCBO, Liquor Control Board of Ontario, will be controlling the sale and distribution for recreational marijuana. You will be able to buy weed online, or through their 40 stores that open in July 2018. Currently, there is speculation that they will use subsidiary company name of CCBO, Cannabis Control Board of Ontario.
Many consumers are questioning that 40 stores will not be enough. Which the black market can take advantage of. If LCBO is selling a gram for $9 or $10, the black market will always under cut their prices. In recent documentaries on VICE, the black market sellers said they can under cut the price 50% and still be satisfied. Low overhead costs. High demand. Easy win for the black market. When consumers can get a great price and quality weed, they ain't going anywhere else. Eventually, LCBO will open up 150 stores by 2020.
There are also concerns that the black market will no longer have the need to find secret places to grow their marijuana plants. Now, they can sit back and grow at home. The black market will form the perfect system to grow their plants legally. For example, buy an apartment building or rental property. Each unit will be able to grow up to 4 plants each. Just think about the numbers. Just with a building with 12 units, 48 plants. Marijuana plants can grow really big like a small tree and can yield up to 1 pound of weed per plant. 12 units x 4 plants = 48 pounds of weed. Medium quality weed about $3000 - 4000 for 1 pound. That's a total of $144,000 to $192,000 for 48 pounds. Now if the black market under cuts LCBO's weed stores by selling 1 pound for $2000. They still end up with approx $100,000, based on a small rental apartment building. Not bad. Who will check if homes are growing 4 plants? In my opinion, I believe that most people will not follow the limit of 4 plants at home and also they will not follow the law to smoke in public places. Honestly, as I walk through Toronto to get to work, every single block at one point, has that smell of marijuana in the air. Welcome to Canada.
