Today the Canadian senate passed legislation to pave the way for recreational cannabis legalisation in the next few months. The final hurdle is for the countries Governor-General to sign off on the bill making it officially law.
Canada will be the second country, after Uruguay, to full legalise recreational marijuana use after legalising medicinal marijuana in 2003.
It will still be illegal to possess over 30 grams of cannabis, grow more than four plants per household and to buy it from an unlicensed dealer, regulations implemented to stem the flow of illegal sales and excessive possession.
It is estimated that sales of cannabis could amount to between C$5 billion and C$7 billion annually, a massive windfall for the government.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrated the vote as a victory for the government, which will "reap the profits" of marijuana legalization, he said in a tweet.
Now where to in Australia. We have just legalised/decriminalised medicinal marijuana in various forms. It took Canada 15 years to legalise recreational marijuana use, will it take that long in Australia??? Probably!
