In Germany, the use of cannabis is already permitted for therapeutic purposes, but until now patients have been required to ask the state for special authorization and, if so, to cover the cost of treatment on their own account, 1,800 euros per month. With the new rule that will take effect in March, both public and private health insurance will have to bear the cost of treatment and a medical prescription will suffice.
However, patients will not be able to grow their own marijuana. The new rule prohibits home cultivation to avoid a "poor quality" product that escapes the control of health authorities.
With the new law, doctors can prescribe cannabis to patients for whom there is no alternative therapy to alleviate chronic pain, lack of appetite and nausea as a result of cancer therapies. It is also seen as a palliative for AIDS patients, rheumatism or multiple sclerosis. Patients receiving cannabis will also participate in a study in which their physicians will anonymously present the diagnosis, treatment and its effect to analyze in depth the impact and benefits of therapy.
"Cannabis will finally become a drug for all who need it, and not just for the rich," the German daily Die Zeit wrote in its online version.
