Hertz billed RSA group 1013$ for damage to a car rental. RSA is the insurer of CIBC credit card car rental. Glad the insurance was included and covered the bill but it still is a dodgy bill to get from Hertz
I am hopeful that it won't impact my credit rating. $1000 seems like a lot and if it does impact my credit score I will be fairly disappointed.
Insurance companies could require car rental firms to take photographs of the car before giving the customer the keys and on return of the car.
If this came from the insurance company side of things then they might implement it.
The current system Hertz operates by marking paper with damage before and after the lease can easily be manipulated by a bad car rental company who wants to charge many customers for the same damage. There is a higher probability of repeated and fraudulent claims by using paper, for example if customers have different insurance companies, does insurance companies know this damage hasn't already been billed to other firms?
The car I rented was leased in South Vancouver and the previous lease was at the airport so the car could have been damaged on the drive by Hertz employee to South Van location or in the Hertz parking lot before I got the car. The last paper that was marked before my lease was while the car was at the airport so their system doesn't account for all the drives taken in the car or the time the car spent in the lot.
The car was parked close to other cars so it's not easy to view it properly before getting the keys either.
I think photographs would reduce the costs billed to customers or insurance companies from car rental firms. They can definitively show that damage was or wasn't on the car before I got the keys. I didn't think I caused the damage to the car and their piece of paper from another customer didn't mark the damage therefore they coerced me into opening the claim.
I know going forward I will take photographs myself on other leases (with other firms) but I think Hertz car rental practices are dodgy at best.
