While many manufacturers apply the policy of downsizing, Audi goes against the current with a V10 on its R8 but also a 5-cylinder on the RS3 and TT RS. Right or wrong ? This is what we will see by entrusting Soheil Ayari, the most sporting declination of the TT.
The 5 cylinder has had its moment of glory a few years ago now. Several manufacturers were then proposing this type of engine architecture, which has now fallen into oblivion due to the tightening of anti-pollution standards. In this unfavorable context, Audi insists and offers in its range of V10 but also 5 cylinders.
To accommodate the latter, the most radical version of the TT is adorned for the occasion of the most beautiful dressing. Compared to the TT S, the TT RS inherits a unique look including a large front bumper, the grille "3D" with the inscription Quattro, 20-inch wheels, a spoiler and two oval tailpipes. It is also possible to benefit, as an option, from carbon-ceramic braking. Despite the presence of these new appendages, no taste fault.
The interior also receives a special treatment, including leather upholstery, and alcantara on the steering wheel, on which is implanted the start button, a first on the TT. Red in color, it activates the most important part of the TT RS, its 5-cylinder sound so mesmerizing, and especially if you have the sport option that opens the exhaust valves to enjoy the melody. It is also impossible to miss the Virtual Cockpit 100% digital instrumentation, which has a specific display with the tachometer in the center of the screen.
If the presentation is flattering, we note nevertheless a small defect in the implementation of pedals. As it is an automatic transmission, there are only two pedals (brake and accelerator - logic) but when you brake your left foot, you can see that both feet are crooked. A wider brake pedal would have been welcome.
Under the hood throne the 2.5 TFSI. Even if he is the last representative of his kind, it must not be thought doomed to immobilism. On the contrary: in 2016, he benefited from a makeover from 367 to 400 hp. Inaugurated on this TT RS, this last generation was then grafted on the RS3 on the occasion of its recent restyling. Beyond its power, it is especially its torque of 480 Nm available over a wide range between 1700 and 5800 rpm that impresses. It is coupled to the 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox and of course the Quattro all-wheel drive. The performances are of first importance with for example a 0 to 100 km / h shot in 3.7 s. On paper, it makes you want but will it be enough to seduce our house pilot, Soheil Ayari? Will the TT RS contradict the unplayable reputation of sporting rings? Answer now.
Price of the tested model - Audi TT-RS: € 76,945
TT RS is the most powerful version, the most radical but also the most expensive. It is thus marketed at a price of € 74,800. Our test model benefited from some additional refinements such as blue Ara Cristal paint invoiced € 1,200 and leather upholstery Nappa with stitching (€ 945) for a total amount of € 76,945.
To remember
Although it is hard not to fall in love with this TT RS and its sublime sound, we can only regret the fact that it is "too" riveted to the ground. Admittedly, it is a guarantee of efficiency and this TT RS is not lacking quite the contrary but it is a pity he is not a little more player. Attention finally, the very fast wear of Pirelli P-Zero Corsa.
