The Austin Champ pictured here is in the National Motor Museum of Australia I took this photo when visiting a couple of years ago.
This is a 1955 model built in England for military service though some were also sold to the public. This one has the Rolls Royce B40, MK 5A motor of 4 cylinders at 173 cubic inches or 2.83 litres capacity making 69 horse power at 3750rpm.
Fitted with a waterproof 24 volt electrical system and when the snorkel is in it's raised position this vehicle can ford water at upto 6 foot 6 inches or 1.98 meters. ( How many other 4WDs can do that from the factory).
Transmission is 5 speed all synchromesh with reverse gear in rear axel thus giving 5 forward and 5 reverse gears. ( You can go just as fast in reverse as you can forward 🤣).
Suspension is of 4 wheel independent designed for fast cross country driving and fitted with 16 inch wheels.
Australia has a very large amount of these vehicles as many have been imported over the years.
