Here on the farm we keep a number of cats to help keep the rodent population down in the area. We found that the females make much better mousers than the males. The males tend to wander off unlike the females who keep close to the house, barn, and farm buildings.
We have 3 female cats on the farm all 3 have been fixed to make sure that no kittens are being born. A Female cat can have up to 3 litters or 12 or more kittens in a year. Therefore, its very important to have your female cats spayed. It is also important not to over feed your mousers, a fat cat is a lazy cat who won't hunt.
Our cats are fed once a day in the morning with a dry cat food. During the winter they are also fed at night to help with the cold Canadian winters. Cats have access to the barn and fresh water all year round where it stays above 0c.
The cats enjoy a break in the heat of the day on the deck. They spend most of the night roaming and hunting around the farm. Notice the paws on the male, he was born with extra toes on his front and back feet.
