Introduction
Recently I introduced the fact have decided to adopt a kitten from a local street restaurant where the owner keeps a Siamese queen who had a litter on 26th Feb. See part one here, and part 2 here. Initially I've said I'll take one, and now have been taming, feeding, and helping out generally to prepare all the cats for foster homes with new humans. I'm still only taking the one, and I'll go into why in a moment. Also about the reasons to wait 8 weeks before little Bat starts his new life!
The white cat is Bat, there are 2 black cats one I have named Panther, the other not yet decided, and the tabby is called Tiger by everyone, and it stuck. Names are subject to change, I'm hoping the other 3 will be adopted to new homes!
Much less afraid to sit high up on my lap now. First few times he freaked out, now he likes the view!
6, 8, 12 Weeks - When to take kitty home?
Often debated but generally accepted is that anything less than 6 weeks is bad news. They won't have had time to fully wean from mothers milk and learn everything about 'being a cat' they need to learn. At this point, these kittens just reached 6 weeks however I feel they are still a little behind and I'm holding out as long as possible. Perhaps we can reach 8 weeks before he goes, that's said to be ok although 12 weeks is said to be best of all. Since I'm seeing him everyday, at least once, he's recognizing and greeting me and not afraid of me any more. That's going to be an advantage versus just taking him to a new home with a 'stranger'.
Mother watches Tiger and Panther2 groom, supervising, teaching and only stepping in at the end to show them if they missed something. It's amazing to witness it.
(When to take home continued ...) It's said that if the kitten is taken too early, they can develop behavior problems later on. During 4-8 weeks, they really get some of the most critical development of their life - if that can be all within the litter, they learn A LOT more by being around mum and their siblings. It's said if this critical period is done right, they are likely to grow into stable, friendly and well adjusted cats later on. I believe 8 weeks will be ok for Bat, if he keeps getting to know me in the next couple of weeks the bond and trust will be ready for it.
Still only a little bigger than my hand, but growing fast
In single kitten syndrome a thing?
The next thing I started to think about, was would Bat be ok with just me for company? Should I rethink and bring 2 of the kittens home? I Googled this up, and like everything on Google these days there is some brainwashing. Some nonsense and pushed opinions sitting on top of the search results. They make a big deal of the 'single kitty syndrone'. Yet many more testimonials can be found, that if you know what you are doing with a cat (and I am experienced since childhood), and will be with them all the time - there is no issue.
Bat and Panther seem to be a team for now. Still having a crisis on whether to take them both...!
Lots of kitten sites attached to rescue centers and cat groups insisting how important it is for cats to have a friend at all times. The counter-argument to this, is that all of these sites want to push kittens out the door (fair enough). Making people take 2 will of course easily double the number of kittens that are re-homed.
The other black cat about 10 days ago, was really too small. I've been encouraging this one to feed more, and his siblings treat him kindly. He's gonna be ok, just needs to catch up.
Solution - be with them all the time, give them the care and attention required
Or get 2 after all? It's still under consideration.
I'm not doubting this single kitten problem can exist. Plus that 2 can be actually less work than one, as they'll play cuddle and take care of each other, even learn faster together.
However, if I planned to leave him home all day alone, for example going out to work and leaving them shut inside with litter box and food, they are going to get lonely, and likely could become destructive or aggressive as they will miss how to interact with others (humans or other cats). However this isn't going to happen to Bat, and if I want my cat to come out with me all the time then 2 might actually be more work - in my specific case. Cats at home all the time, you go out to work etc - then definitely get 2. Cat is with you 24/7 and you have done the necessary knowledge to look after? I think this can be ok too.
Yes. It for sure is a good idea for cats to have company. Do get 2 if you are thinking about it, they share everything so the cost isn't high. You can leave them together at home alone all day - they will never be bored or lonely, they won't be so destructive either, as they'll have each other.
Cuteness overload
My intention is to harness and leash train Bat. This can easily be done with Siamese breeds. To have a carrier and portability at all times, so he can get used to going with me everywhere. This will means lots and lots of stimulus, he won't need to be alone, as I'll be with him as his 'parent' all the time, especially for the first few months. It means I'll have to play with him lots, and will be getting him out to meet other animals virtually daily. He will be visiting his brothers sisters and mother often also!
All 4 fit around the dinner 'table' (plate) and are actually good at sharing. No aggro, just eating.
Conclusion
Hope you enjoyed this kitten advise on raising baby cats without trauma. Perhaps it will guide some cats to getting a better balanced life from their human. This has been another HIVE blockchain exclusive content, see the NewtonClassicswebsite for more on Cars, Travel, Adventure - all cross posted thanks to EXPP. Thanks go to HIVE.blog and BitShares for I believe this solution will work - if you can be with your kitten all the time, and know how to act as 'mother brother friend and playmate' with them, they can still become balanced and happy. Anyway, we shall know fairly quickly and we can always get another one later to keep him company.
What they do 80% of the time, just nap, and chill out
Here's a quick few clips of the little guys, which includes them showing me how good at grooming themselves they are getting now also:
