This is my August update of the presumed stray orange cat called Goldie. These past two weeks the weather had been very stormy and rainy in Bangkok making it difficult to travel through the traffic jam. I was unable to check out on her the whole week. So, it was such a relief the other day when I could see Goldie sitting at the top of the steps, in front of Starbucks.
There were several people coming out of the Tops supermarket who noticed the orange cat and wanting to come up to her. But generally the grownups stopped their kids from approaching stray cat. Two young girls were hanging around watching me talking to Goldie. They were around ten and eight years old, the two sisters, with facial masks hanging under their chins. They were waiting for their parents’ shopping spree in Tops.
I could see that they wanted to get close to Goldie but they were a bit afraid. So I walked back to tell them about Goldie’s life story. The reason why Goldie could be find sitting there every evening waiting for her original owner during the last twenty years. That place used to be the shop-house where she was born and raised; the mall building project replaced all the shop-houses and a market. Goldie’s owner moved away leaving the orange kitten among the construction workers. Then, a nice fruit-lady adopted Goldie and has been looking after her for twenty-one years by now. But Goldie always went back to the spot which used to be her owner’s house waiting for her to come back.
The little girls were surprised to know that Goldie was not a young cat. I told them that she could be similar to an eighty years old grandmother. So, we should be very gentle with her. The older girl asked me whether she would bite if people touched her. I told her that Goldie has always been a very friendly and gentle cat; people came to talk to her quite often. As I was walking away, I saw the two little girls touching Goldie very gently while talking to her. It always amazes me how this sad and lonely looking cat could bring out the better side of people, regardless of their ages or professions.
สองสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมากรุงเทพฯ ถูกกระหน่ำด้วยพายุฝนและอากาศแปรปรวนเกือบทุกวัน ทำให้น้ำท่วมและรถติดมาก เราก็เลยไม่ได้ไปเยี่ยม เจ้าแมวส้มที่มีชื่อไทยว่าเจ้าทอง และชื่อฝรั่งว่าโกลดี้ สามวันก่อนเราไปแถวนั้นเพื่อซื้อของและไปเดินตามหาเจ้าทองสามรอบ ตอนแรกคิดว่ามันหลบไปหาที่หลบฝน แต่เราก็เจอเจ้าทองนั่งเงียบๆอย่างเดียวดายหน้าร้านกาแฟ เราดีใจมากจึงรีบไปทักทายมันทันที เราคิดว่าทองดูอ้วนขึ้นหน่อย และดูเศร้าหน่อยๆ เราดีใจที่มันยังจำเราได้ เราก็ลูบตัวให้มันเพื่อเอาขนที่ร่วงแล้วออกจากตัวมัน มันยังชอบให้เราเกาคอเหมือนเดิม มันยื่นคอมาให้เราเกาให้เต็มที่เลย นานๆไปเจอที แมวส้มเลยใช้เราให้คุ้มเวลา

เราสังเกตเห็นคนที่ออกจากห้างหลายคนอยากมาเล่นกับแมวส้มผู้เดียวดาย แต่ส่วนใหญ่ผู้ปกครองจะคอยห้ามเด็กไม่ให้มาเล่นกับแมวจรจัด เราก็คุยกับเจ้าทองสักพัก มีเด็กน้อยสองพี่น้องยืนดูเราคุยกับแมว แต่มีท่าทางกังวลมาก เราก็เลยเดินไปเล่าเรื่องราวชีวิตของเจ้าทองให้ฟัง เด็กก็ได้รู้ว่าแมวตัวนี้อายุมากกว่ายี่สิบปีแล้ว เจ้าของแมวเคยมีบ้านอยู่ที่ตรงนั้น พอเขามาสร้างห้างก็ทำให้บ้านตึกแถวและตลาดโดนรื้อหมด เจ้าของแมวก็ย้ายไปไกลมากโดยทิ้งลูกแมวไว้ที่เขตก่อสร้าง คนขายผลไม้แถวนั้นสงสารจึงเอาไปดูแล แต่ทุกวันแมวส้มจะไปนั่งรอที่เดิมเพื่อคอยเจ้าของเดิมกลับมาหามันจนติดเป็นนิสัยจนทุกวันนี้ เราคิดว่ามันคงจำเจ้าของคนแรกไม่ได้แล้ว แต่ความเคยชินทำให้มันไปนั่งที่นั่นทุกวัน เด็กสองคนก็ตกใจที่รู้ว่าแมวส้มอายุมากเหมือนคนอายุวัยยายคน เราบอกเด็กว่าแมวส้มใจดีมากและไม่เคยกัดคนเลย ตอนเราเดินกลับเราเห็นเด็กกำลังค่อยๆลูบตัวแมว และคุยกรบแมวด้วย เราแปลกใจมากที่แมวส้มที่โดดเดี่ยวและดูเหมือนโดนทอดทิ้ง มีความพิเศษในการที่ทำให้คนหลายคนแสดงความอ่อนโยนออกมา มีคนหลากหลายอายุและอาชีพที่แสดงความอ่อนโยนต่อแมวส้มตัวนี้ เราจะให้ดูรูปที่เราแอบเก็บมาแสดงถึงความพิเศษนี้
