Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic. 26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by British Regime.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays tribute to the martyrs by laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate on the occasion of Republic Day. The Republic Day parade begins at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate where PM Modi pays homage to the soldiers who died in the line of duty. Modi is accompanied by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba. After laying the wreath, Modi observes a two-minute silence to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.

President Ram Nath Kovind presents Ashok Chakra to Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala. Ashok Chakra has been awarded posthumously to Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, a Garud commando of the Air Force, who died fighting terrorists in Bandipora of Jammu and Kashmir in November. The Ashok Chakra is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.

The Grenadiers is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army, formerly part of the Bombay Army and later the pre-independence British Indian Army, when the regiment was known as the 4th Bombay Grenadiers. Their motto is Sarvatra Saktishali.
Indian Navy/showcase Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) Vikrant, which will be commissioned in 2020 and the Defence Development and Research Organisation will exhibit the 'Nirbhay' missile and the Ashwini radar system.

An indigenously developed Ashwini Radar by **DRDO** India showcased at the 69th **Republic Day Parade**. It exhibits India's enhanced defence manufacturing capabilities.
A camel contingent of the BSF and columns of the 61st cavalry with 51 horses takes part in the parade. India is celebrating its 69th Republic Day today by showcasing its military prowess, culture and diversity in the presence of leaders of the 10 ASEAN nations who are attending the event as chief guests. The Camel mounted band, the only one of its kind in the world, is playing "Ham Hai Seema Suraksha Bal".
