The word 'tsunami' is japanese meaning 'harbor wave' or 'big wave in the port', the name was coined because of a characteristic of tsunamis in that the height of the waves are low(30-60cm)out at sea but become massive (up to 30meters) as they get close to shore.
Tsunamis are caused by earhquakes, volcanic eruptions, underwater or coastal landslides. Their effects can be massively destructive. The tallest tsunami ever is the 1958 Lituya Bay megatsunami, which had a height of 524m. The deadliest tsunami in history is the Indian Ocean
Tsunami, it occured in 2004 and about 250,000 people lost their lives.....may their souls rest in peace.
