If I was writting this in spanish, I'd say "La censura no viene sólo desde arriba, sino también desde abajo", meaning "Censorship comes not only from above, but also from below. Above meaning the government, and below meaning common people like ourselves.
Try this for an experiment: choose one controversial opinion, view or stance you have on any matter. Any one. Now post it on social media. You'll see that a bunch of people will be angry, really angry, at what you just said. And they'll make you know it.
And not by saying "hey man, this you just said offends me". Not with a simple go **** yourself. No. They'll do their best to discredit you, to make you feel an ignorant and evil person. They'll try to punish you for your insolence. They'll try to publicly humiliate you, and to assert a hostile environment for any further unorthodoxy. Everyone gets angry once in a while and everyone can relate, but this is something beyond that. You'll know that by the disproportion of their response. Even the response from people you believe to be your friends - and perhaps truly are.
Some remarkable people are able to resist and overcome this, to shrug it off. Most of us, however, are not. I, at least, am not.
I believe this is something most of you already know. I just wanted to get it out of my chest.
Regards!
