New English words I have learned today #1 (2017.07.31)
As I read and write the articles on Steemit, I have to use a translator (online translator/dictionary) to understand (and sometimes to remember) certain words because I am not a native English speaker. Today I decided to start writing a personal diary to document my own development.
This blog series is about the new words I have learned today.
I will write a blog post every day about this if am learning a new word.
I hope I can help improving my (and other people's) English usage and English learning progress by writing this diary.
Today's new English words for me:
| English word | Hungarian word(s) |
|---|---|
| Appraisal | Becsült/Értékelés/Felmérés |
| Deteriorates | Leromlik/Megromlik |
| Dilated | Kitágult/Megnyúlt |
| Moisture | Nedvesség/Páratartalom/Csapadék/Nyírkosság/Nedv |
| Rot | Korhadás/Rothadás |
| Spatula | Spatula/Szedőlapát |
| Lime | Lime/Mész |
| Gratifying | Kielégítő/Örömteli |
Notes:
- Some of the words can have other meanings depending on the context. Some of the words can have multiple meanings in English but one in Hungarian. For example the word "Lime" can mean the material and the fruit as well as the color in English but in Hungarian. we only use this word to the fruit. We also refer to the fruit by "savanyú citrom" or "zöldcitrom". We refer to the material by "Mész". We refer to the color by "zöld" which is "green" in English.
- As you can see some of the words can be the same in English and in Hungarian. (For example the word "Spatula".)
- Although I saw a "Spatula" before, I didn't know it's name. I never heard this word before. Not in English nor in Hungarian.
- We also refer to the "Spatula" by the word "Szedőlapát" which I think it's more common (idiomatic) in (the) Hungarian vulgar tongue (vernacular language) than the word "Spatula".
- The (English and the Hungarian) pronunciation is different in this case (Spatula) but in some cases (words) the pronunciation can also be the same in English and in Hungarian.
Thank you for reading!

Have a nice day!
