Foreword: If you are on a diet, then shitty-ass "diet foods" are probably not what you want to be eating. If you have ever had anything that said "Diet", chances are, it contained Aspartame.
Aspartame is the #1 diet sweetener and it's used in the following:
Diet sodas (liquid acid garbage and bubbles)
Sugar-Free Gum (most types are trash)
Nutrasweet (basically another name for aspartame)

This chemical is a little bit easier to avoid than the average, because you pretty much have to go out of your way to buy it, in order to get exposed.
Also, glucose, which is normal sugar, is healthier than Aspartame, which is the by-product (excrement) of bacteria.
YES, you HAVE to moderate your sugar levels, but I'd rather have organic, ACTUAL sugar cane. This natural, REAL sugar is typically brown looking and in very large crystals, and it is not produced as a by-product. Think of by-products as Random-Chemical-Shit-Turned-Commodity, like fluoride.
Sugar is addicting, so be careful! Try to minimize your consumption of it (:
