There are 3 districts in the Chennai metropolitan area: Chennai city, Kachipuram and Thiruvallur. The area of the city area is 174 km² (67 miles²).The area of Metropolitan area is 1,177 km² (455 mi²). The city is divided into four broad areas: north, central, west and south.

Chennai's economy is dependent on a variety of industries, including automobiles, software services, hardware production and financial services industries. Other important labor-intensive industries are Petrochemical, Textile and Garment. The location of the Chennai Port has increased the importance of this city. Here is a computer-controlled stock exchange that is known as the Madras Stock Exchange.
By the end of 1990, software production and business process outsourcing (BPO) and more recent production industries have become the cornerstone of the city's economy. Many technology parks have been established in the Information Technology Center of Old Mahabalipuram Road in the southeast of the city. Mahindra World City is a special economic zone (SEZ) and the world's largest information technology park is now being constructed outside the city of Chennai.
