On the 28th of June 2025, I added another gold medal to my collection at the second edition of Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship. I represented my school, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, delivering a flawless 6/6 performance.
About the Event
This year’s performance was a tough one to take, we finished 15th out of 31 schools, a result that came as a surprise considering our 9th-place finish out of 42 schools in the previous edition. I dedicated a lot of time and effort to preparing the team, and we went in with high spirits and strong expectations. Unfortunately, things didn’t go our way.
Still, setbacks are part of the journey. We’ll return to the drawing board, learn from this experience, and come back stronger, smarter, and more determined. I remain proud of this incredible team and hopeful that I’ll have the opportunity to lead us to the top next year.
Personal achievement
In the first edition of this event, I won an individual gold medal with a perfect 6/6 score, completely dominating on my assigned board. It was a reflection of the hard work I put into preparing for the competition.
This year, I’m proud to say I repeated that achievement... another gold medal, another flawless 6/6 performance. To deliver back-to-back perfect scores in such a competitive field is a significant feat.
While team results didn’t go as planned this time, individual moments like these remind me of the progress being made and the potential ahead. I’m committed to maintaining this consistency and hope to continue the streak in the next edition stronger, sharper, and more prepared than ever.
If I could I'd share links to all my games but I can't because they weren't all broadcasted, nevertheless the link to a game I played in round 2 against a player from the University of Lagos is attached below
Conclusion
To add to an amazing tournament experience, the venue itself added a special touch, offering a calm and peaceful atmosphere that perfectly complemented the nature of chess.
