Another step toward a new work visa from China
Yesterday the postal carrier delivered authentications from the Kentucky Secretary of State's office. Today I popped them in the mail for their last seal of approval -- from the US State Department.
The documents flitting about the country are my college diploma and an official statement attesting that I have no criminal record. Both need to be "authenticated" before my prospective employer in Zhengzhou, China, can apply for my preliminary work permit, which I need to apply for a work visa (Z visa) from China.
I put "authenticated" in quotes because the seals of approval from the notary public and county, state and federal offices really only attest that I am who I say I am, and that each official signature is valid. IOW, the notary attests to my identity, the county verifies his signature, the state verifies the county's verification, and so on.
The documents themselves could be complete fabrications (they aren't). At no point in this long chain of approvals does the validity of the actual documents get checked. It's really rather silly, but I suppose it satisfies Chinese bureaucrats who need some kind of "proof" that a job applicant is being honest.
In any event, it requires the applicant to spend money even before he pays for the visa and his plane ticket to China. So far, my tab is up to $61 for all this paper shuffling.
I hope it's all worth it. In the last few days, I heard that China may make individual VPNs illegal, may shut off access to WhatsApp (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and others are already blocked), and that a heat wave has sent temperatures in some parts of the country above 100°F (40°C).
