Jesus went out of town with all his disciples, not just the twelve, but also the many others who regularly came to him to learn about the kingdom of God. Jesus led them to a mountain outside the city. Here he sat down, and his disciples gathered around him.
Then Jesus answered and taught them:
"Blessed are the poor in the spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Blessed are they that make sure that they shall be comforted.
Blessed are they meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall meet mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are those who establish peace, for they are called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Blessed are you when people mock you and persecute you and lie to you all sorts of evil. Rejoice and rejoice, my disciples,
for your reward is great in heaven. Thus, people also persecuted the prophets before you."
Jesus looked around at them all, looking into each other every turn and saying, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its taste, how will it ever be salty again? No, it's over. Then it does not matter, but is thrown out and trampled down. "
Again, Jesus looked at them all and said, "You are the light of the world. But a candle put under a bucket makes no use. On the other hand, if you say it in a candlestick, it gives light throughout the house. Let your light shine for people. Let them see your good deeds, so that they may praise your Father who is in heaven.
You, my disciples who are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, are perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect. "
Jesus continued teaching the disciples many things and also said: "When you pray, do not let the mouth run like the heathen do. They think they are being heard for their many words. But you have to think that your father in heaven knows what you need, even before you ask for it. Therefore, pray as follows:
Our Father, you who are in heaven!
Sanctify be your name, get your kingdom,
do your will as in heaven so on earth too;
Give us today our daily bread,
and forsake us our fault,
as we also leave our debtors,
and do not lead us into temptation,
but free us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the honor
for ever! Amen."
