Paul did not just choose Timothy to mentor but he saw some basic qualities in him.
Thus, mentees are not just picked they are to be intentionally chosen to enable proper discipleship and investment for future leadership.
Paul met Timothy in the cause of his ministry. It was not Timothy that came but Paul spotted him at his duty post serving the Lord.
Here are three things Paul saw in Timothy:
He was a disciple (v1b).
The person to be chosen as a mentee must be a growing disciple, someone that is committed to learning and following the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul knew Timothys root and his parents.
He had a testimony amongst the believers (v2). Timothy was well thought of by the believers. He had a testimony in the Church and community. He was not just a disciple at home but also in the Church.
He was willing to let go of personal rights for the gospel. He was a Greek but accepted to be circumcised in order to join Paul.
He was willing to take steps that will enable him learn and influence others. Timothy became very instrumental in handling the church because he had the basic qualities of being a mentee or follower.
