Today I'm sharing some photos of just a few of the many churches in the city of Naples, Italy. Naples has a very interesting artistic style. The style has a darker feel overall but still very ornate. I truly love the style. The first church is called Gesù Nuovo (New Jesus).
Below is a photo of the outside of the church. It's a giant wall covered in stone extrusions. Each extrusion has a rune on it. It's a mystery as to what the runes mean. Outside of the church in the square is a statue of the Madonna atop a tall obelisk, which at night turns into the figure of death further adding to the mystery here.
Next is the Church of San Domenico Maggiore. I actually walked by this church many times during my stay in Naples and had no idea it was a church. It wasn't until I was told about the church that I even entered. The interior is truly elaborate and just stunning, especially the ceiling.
The last of the churches that I'm sharing today is the Duomo di Napoli. While not my favorite, it is stunning and quite large. The statues in the chapel are sculpted from a dark marble and are quite unique.
The main altarpiece called the Assumption of Mary was sculpted by Pietro Bracci, the sculptor of Oceanus in the Trevi fountain. This is a large sculpture and a must-see on a trip to Naples.
Lastly, is the Veiled Christ in the Museo Cappella Sansevero. I did not take these photos of the Veiled Christ because photos are not allowed to be taken inside the chapel (all other photos were taken by me). The photos were taken from the museum's website. The chapel itself is breathtaking but the museum is so militaristic in the way that it guards the statue and the chapel that it ruins the experience. I still felt that it was something to share and definitely worth seeing if visiting Naples. In fact, this was the last attraction that I saw during my stay in the city. The Veiled Christ was sculpted by Giuseppe SanMartino.
