The church at Ix-Xewkija is the largest church on the island of Gozo. It boasts the third largest unsupported dome in the world. The dome is 28 meters in diameter and weighs 45,000 tonnes. Local limestone is used for its construction which was carried out. The church took 20 years to build. The first stone was laid in 1951.
The church dominates the area and can be seen for miles around.

Taken from the Cittadella of Victoria the church to the left can easily be seen in silouette to the left. It really is a spectacular church with its dome standing 75 meters high.
