Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -- Russia claims to have killed 200 Ukrainian soldiers after firing missiles at a military train in Dnipropetrovsk on Wednesday (24/8), right on the country's independence day.
"As a result of the Iskander missile firing at a military train in the Dnipropetrovsk region, more than 200 personnel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and 10 military equipment were destroyed," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The Russian Ministry of Defense explained that at the time of the incident, the train was "on its way to the battle zone" in Donbas, an area currently being targeted by the Red Bear Country.
Meanwhile, Ukraine announced that the Russian attack also killed 25 civilians in the vicinity of the incident. On this independence day, it is exactly six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Local residents also feel the irony of not being able to celebrate it freely.
The Ukrainian government has appealed to citizens not to celebrate the anniversary of independence because crowds can become easy targets for Russian troops.
The authorities in a number of areas have also implemented curfews to prevent residents from going out at vulnerable hours.
The train line which was targeted on Independence Day itself is one of the important arenas for the evacuation of civilians in the midst of war.
This is not the first time Russia has fired missiles at public transport facilities in Ukraine during its invasion.
In April, Russia also struck a station in the city of Kramatorsk, killing at least 57 civilians.
