It's walls could protect the surrounding population from invaders attacks. On an area of 11 hectares, food for many people under siege could be cultivated. On the two sides it was protected by the rivers, and from the third by a deep channel.

This is the ancient Smederevo fortress. The Serbian capital in the fifteenth century and their last defense before the onslaught of the Ottomans.
