I first noticed this in grad school, where I was surrounded by colleagues who placed their end-goals above democratic process, our considered democratic process legitimate only if it settled on their end goals.
These folks always assume the suspension of liberal democracy and its guarantees of individual rights will be done by the "right" people, who will only use their extraordinary power for those good ends. But what is the basis for assuming that? Once the power is there, the temptation to turn it to other supposedly good ends - as determined by those who have the power, not by the people they rule - will be relentless. And those who object become dangerous enemies of the public good, who must be suppressed. And who is more tempted by, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve, that power? The truly good and trustworthy people (assuming there is in this world anyone can be trusted with that power) or wicked people?
The dream of a powerful government that is nevertheless constrained to only doing good is an adolescent fantasy. Unfortunately some people never grow out of their political adolescence.
