I have been checking out new and old coins since I was young but it was just recently that I started collecting them.
The photo above shows my recent purchase in Shopee from a seller named Commemorative Bills Coins Manila.
What are Commemorative Coins
Commemorative coins are limited edition coins produced to commemorate a special occasion, event, or issue. These coins are usually understood as collectible items for some collectors and are divided into three kinds.
Three types of commemorative coins:
- Regular Issue - coins released and produced to circulate and used in daily purchase. These are designed and issued for several years.
- Circulating Commemoratives - coins released and produced for a certain occasion or event. They are limited edition coins which are designed and issued for a certain period only.
- Non-Circulating Legal Tender - coins released and produced as legal tender. These coins can be used in daily purchases but are not intended to be used for that purpose. They are good as souvenirs and are usually produced with gold and silver as the material (with proof finish).
PHILIPPINE COMMEMORATIVE COINS
There is a sole authority who has the power to produce and issue our country’s currency, banknotes, and coins and that is Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or BSP.
Philippines has lots of circulated coins for the past years and you can check it in BSP’s brochure.
BSP sells Commemorative Coins (Circulating and Non-Circulating) through their Cash Department at Quezon City For further details, check it here. There are also sellers outside BSP who procures from them and sold it to local collectors.
MY COIN COLLECTION
I received these coins last week and decided to open it yesterday. I covered temporarily those circulated commemorative coins (limited edition ones) while waiting for the ziplocks I ordered.
Tadaaaa! I know it looks awful but I tried my best to cover them :))
I also have these Non-Circulating Legal Tender coins that I super adore! I was so kilig when I saw them at the online store!

I am looking at these coins as if they are my treasure that I can pass on to my future child, grand child, and all after them. Aside from these coins, I am looking forward to collecting banknotes too! I also have coins from other countries that I’d like to keep and arrange as another collection.
That’s it for now! I’ll be sharing with you the details of each coin in my future posts so stay tune!
...For Filipino’s like me, if you have time and interested to collect, please look at the coins you have onhand and check which type of commemorative coins they belong! Also, If you want to have some and can’t go to BSP’s counter, the shop where I bought these coins is having a sale today! Check the shop here!
