"Viejo yendo a casa"
Guadalupe, Colombia. 2016.
Guadalupe is a very small, relatively unknown town in the norther-eastern of Colombia in the Santander region. The only way to reach the town is by taking an hour long ride in the back of a truck. There were about 10 of us crammed into the back. I happened to be sitting with my back to the cab of the truck, giving me a fun and clear view of all the passengers and the beautiful, rugged terrain we were passing. For the entire hour I couldn't take my eyes off this old man. Something about him was intriguing; his nails, wrinkled face, cloudy eyes, hat and well pressed white collard shirt. I introduced myself in very broken Spanish and asked if I could take some photos of him. With a smile, "Si" he said. I maybe took around a dozen photos but this was the most interesting. All his features which attracted my eye to him as a subject in the first place were perfectly shown as he grabbed his neck and let out a few wet, deep coughs. Once we reached town - his home, presumably - he gave me a hand shake that lasted 30 seconds. Smiled and walked away. I never saw him again after that ride but have always thought back to this photo, wondering more about this old man.
