In Darvasa, Turkmenistan a fire has been burning since 1971
I visited in 2011 as part of my epic overland adventure to Mongolia. It was a very surreal experience!
It's a natural gas field that collapsed into an underground cavern, creating a huge crater. It was set alight in 1971 to prevent the spread of methane gas. It measures 69m/226ft wide... second blurry photo of me for scale!
