Mission Santa Barbara is painted in a purple glow during La Fiesta Pequeña on the opening day of 2017's Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara, California. Mission Santa Barbara is a Spanish mission founded by the Franciscan Padre Fermín Lasuén on December 4, 1786, the feast day of Saint Barbara, as the tenth mission in Alta California for the religious conversion of the indigenous Chumash tribe of Native American people. The mission became the namesake of the city of Santa Barbara.
