The Laguna de Yahuarcocha (lake of blood in Quichua), is a sacred lake in Ecuador. Looking through the still waters of the picturesque Ibarra region, it is hard to imagine that it would ever have been the scene of a bloody massacre as a result of indigenous resistance to Inca rule.
The name Yahuarcocha ("Yahuar" means blood and "cocha" means lake) is of Quechua origin, part of the Quechua language spoken mainly in the Andes region of South America.

When Huayna-Capac leader Inca finally conquered the tribes, historical documents record that he massacred all the Caranqui men from 12 years of age onwards and threw their bodies to Yahuarcocha, whose color turned red because of the blood. Cobo writes that "the Incas ordered their men to cut off their enemies' throats without any pity, since they had hunted them and then thrown their bodies into the lake."..........
La Laguna de Yahuarcocha ( lago de sangre en quichua), es un lago sagrado en Ecuador. Al mirar a través de las quietas aguas de la pintoresca región de Ibarra, es difícil imaginar que alguna vez hubiera sido el escenario de una sangrienta masacre como consecuencia de la resistencia indígena al dominio inca.
El nombre Yahuarcocha ("Yahuar" significa sangre y "cocha" significa lago) es de origen quichua, parte de la lengua quechua que se habla principalmente en la región de los Andes en Sudamérica.
